How to Use Dahua SmartPSS: Complete Setup Guide for Windows and Mac
This guide walks you through downloading, installing, configuring, and using Dahua SmartPSS (Smart Professional Surveillance System) on Windows and macOS, plus key tips for optimal performance and troubleshooting.
What is Dahua SmartPSS
SmartPSS is Dahua’s desktop video management software for managing cameras, NVRs, and other Dahua devices. It provides live view, playback, device management, event handling, and exporting video.
Before you start
- System requirements (general): modern multi-core CPU, 4–8 GB RAM (8+ GB recommended for multiple streams), SSD recommended, up-to-date GPU drivers for video acceleration.
- Network: Devices and PC must be on the same local network for initial discovery, or devices reachable via public IP/DDNS/port forwarding.
- Accounts and credentials: Have device admin username/password and, if using cloud service, your Dahua cloud account ready.
- Firewall/antivirus: Allow SmartPSS through firewall and disable antivirus blocking during install if needed.
Download and install
Windows
- Go to Dahua’s official download center (search “Dahua SmartPSS download”) and choose the latest SmartPSS for Windows (⁄64-bit as appropriate).
- Run the installer (.exe) and follow prompts: accept license, choose install folder, install prerequisites if prompted (Visual C++ redistributables).
- After installation, launch SmartPSS and allow firewall access when prompted.
macOS
- Download the macOS DMG from Dahua’s official site.
- Open the DMG, drag SmartPSS to Applications, then run SmartPSS from Applications.
- On first run, grant required permissions (screen recording for viewing, microphone if audio needed). If macOS blocks the app, open System Preferences → Security & Privacy → General and allow the app.
First-time setup
- Launch SmartPSS.
- Create a user account for SmartPSS (local) with a secure password.
- In the main window, set language and storage paths for exported videos and screenshots.
Adding devices
You can add devices locally (IP/serial) or via Dahua Cloud P2P (if supported).
Add by IP/Domain
- Go to Device Management → Add.
- Choose Dahua Device type.
- Enter Device Name, IP/Domain, Port (default 37777 for some Dahua devices; 80/8000/others depending on model), Username, Password.
- Click Add. If connection fails, verify network, port forwarding, and credentials.
Add by Auto-Detect (UPnP/ONVIF)
- In Device Management, use Search to auto-discover devices on the LAN.
- Select devices and click Add.
Add by Cloud (P2P)
- In device settings, enable Cloud or register device’s SN to Dahua Cloud using the Dahua device web UI or mobile app.
- In SmartPSS, choose Cloud Device, sign in to your Dahua cloud account, and add the device by SN.
Live view and layout
- Open Live View.
- Drag devices/channels from the device tree into view panes.
- Use layout controls to change grid (1, 4, 9, 16, etc.).
- Right-click a video pane for options: digital zoom, playback, PTZ control, stream quality (main/sub-stream), snapshot, and record.
PTZ control
- Use on-screen PTZ panel or a connected joystick.
- Set presets: move camera to desired position → click Set Preset → name it.
- Recall presets or set patrol patterns in PTZ control panel.
Playback and exporting video
- Open Playback.
- Select device/channel, date, and time range.
- Use timeline to jump to events or motion segments.
- Select clips and use Download or Export to save files. Choose format (usually .dav or .mp4 depending on device and export settings). Use built-in player or Dahua Smart Player for .dav.
Event handling and alarms
- Configure events in device web UI (motion detection, line crossing, VCA).
- In SmartPSS, go to Alarm Management to view and acknowledge incoming events.
- Set email/SNMP notifications in device settings if needed.
User management and permissions
- In System Configuration → User Management, create additional SmartPSS users and assign permissions (live, playback, export, device management).
- For enterprise use, enable LDAP/AD integration if supported.
Storage and recording
- Configure recording schedules per device/channel: continuous, motion, alarm, or custom.
- Ensure storage paths in SmartPSS or on NVR have sufficient space and circular recording enabled if desired.
- Use NAS or network share for centralized storage if available.
Mobile access and remote viewing
- For remote access, either:
- Use Dahua Cloud P2P (register device and access via SmartPSS cloud list), or
- Configure port forwarding/DDNS and add device by public IP/domain.
- For mobile, use Dahua’s DMSS or HiLookVision apps and connect with the same device credentials or cloud account.
Performance tips
- Use sub-stream for multi-camera monitoring; main-stream for recording/exports.
- Enable hardware acceleration in SmartPSS settings if available.
- Limit simultaneous high-resolution streams to avoid CPU/GPU overload.
- Run SmartPSS on wired network for stability.
Common troubleshooting
- No device found: confirm IP, subnet, firewall, and that device SSH/ONVIF is enabled.
- Login failed: check credentials, try default ports, reboot device if necessary.
- Choppy playback: switch to sub-stream, reduce frame rate, update GPU drivers.
- Exported video won’t play: install Dahua Smart Player or convert .dav with Smart Player.
Security best practices
- Change default device and SmartPSS passwords.
- Keep firmware and SmartPSS updated.
- Use strong, unique passwords and, if available, enable two-factor authentication on accounts.
Quick checklist (summary)
- Download latest SmartPSS for your OS.
- Install and grant permissions.
- Add devices (IP, auto-detect, or cloud).
- Configure live view, recording, PTZ presets, and event alerts.
- Test playback and export.
- Harden security and optimize performance.
